About What If

History is one long chain of small and large accidents. This site pulls on individual links.

Every article here takes something that genuinely happened — an invention, a discovery, a battle, a decision — and imagines one thing about it going differently. Not "what if magic existed" different. "What if this one real event had gone the other way" different. From there, each scenario tries to trace the consequences outward: what would have changed immediately, what it would have meant close to home, what it would have meant globally, and — in a dedicated closing section — how far the most extreme, speculative versions of that change could plausibly have gone.

This is a thought experiment, not a prediction

We want to be completely upfront about this, because it's easy for "what if" writing to slide into sounding more confident than it should. Nobody can actually know what would have happened if a single historical event had gone differently — real history is the product of millions of interacting causes, most of which we can't fully trace even for the events that did happen. Every scenario on this site is a piece of speculative, reasoned storytelling: grounded in real historical research about what actually happened and why it mattered, then extended with an author's best judgment about plausible consequences. It is not a forecast, a claim of certainty, or a substitute for actual historical scholarship.

We take the "big" examples (a different outcome to a war, a discovery that never happens) as seriously as the "small" ones (an appliance that's never invented, a habit that never catches on) — the small ones are often the more interesting thought experiments precisely because their consequences are easier to trace with a straight face.

How each scenario is structured

Every article follows the same shape, building outward in stages: a bit of real history about the thing being changed, the moment or mechanism of the divergence itself, the immediate impact once that change takes hold, what it would mean locally, what it would mean globally, and finally a section of more extreme, further-reaching scenarios — the speculative edges of the premise, presented as exactly that.

A note on where this site is right now

This site is an early prototype. The name "What If" is a placeholder rather than a final decision, and there are only a handful of scenarios published so far rather than the much larger archive planned if the concept moves forward. Advertising and analytics aren't wired up yet either — the layout is built to support them, but nothing is live.
